Acoustic levitation of water droplets
These water droplets are not falling; they’re actually stuck in place. What we’re seeing is the effects of an acoustic levitator. The device was initially developed by NASA to simulate microgravity. The two parts of the apparatus seen in the image above are both speakers. They put out a sound at about 22 kHz, which is beyond the human range of hearing. When precisely aligned they interfere with each other and create a standing wave. The droplets are trapped in the nodes of that wave.
Self-Contained Robotic Farms Offer Glimpse of Lunar Food Factories
At this strawberry farm in the Netherlands, crops are grown on table-top raised beds, which makes it easier to pick the fruits and eases weed and pest control. A leaf and sap analysis determines the nutrients' compounds, which then enter the irrigation water. To accelerate the growth of the plants, growers add CO2 from a nearby Shell refinery.
For two years now, Najade has been visiting farming sites around Europe, where technology is allowing people to grow and produce food in highly engineered ways. Greenhouse tomatoes in Germany can now stay warm in the cooler months with waste heat from nuclear power stations. There’s also a farm where cress, tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce are grown with LED lights and in areas that have no direct air exchange from the outside. Many traditional farm operations at the sites are automated and self-sustaining.
“I got fascinated and overwhelmed by how humans continuously push the boundaries to control and to overpower nature, how day and night, summer and winter, geographical locations slowly become irrelevant for farming,” says Najade, who is originally from Germany but is now based in London. “It is said agriculture has changed in the last 40 years more than in 400 years.”
For us at Raw File, the combination of plants and engineering in her photos evoke autonomous ecosystems that could potentially grow food in space, but Najade is on the fence about the prospect.
“Growing food on the moon?” she says. “It’s totally possible, but I don’t know if I’ll witness that. Hopefully not. I don’t want to be completely negative but that is so far away from nature that it does feel wrong. But then you might also tell me that they are also using energy that is wasted and then maybe I would say it’s not so bad.”
People have strong opinions about these developments, even when they’re only used here on Earth. Some cheer technologies that use recycled waste products or that cut down on how far a tomato has to travel to get to a supermarket in winter, in light of the fact that most food in America travels an average of 1,500 miles before it reaches your plate. Others might be disturbed to see natural cycles pushed aside in favor of convenience, especially when “one is not able to fully understand or foresee the consequences of these new trends,” says Najade. She doesn’t want to take a side.
“I feel very torn about the topic,” she says.
When it comes to her own eating habits she says she’s more aware of where things come from but she hasn’t renounced things like out-of-season fruit. “I still love strawberries,” she says.
The Strawberries series is ongoing and Najade has also added a new chapter called Misfits that does take a clearer stand on food politics. In that project she photographs fruits and vegetables that didn’t make it into the supermarkets because of slight deformities. Royal Gala Apples, she says, need to have a “round shape characteristic of the variety,” and blemishes cannot exceed five percent of the fruit or they end up in the juicer instead of on the shelves. Campari tomatoes cannot have superficial defects that exceed 2 mm or they end up in the trash.

There are especial cases: blurring due to incorrect focus and blurring due to movement - and these very defects (which each of you knows very well, and which are very difficult to repair) were selected as the subject of this article. As for other image defects (noise, incorrect exposure, distortion), the humanity has learned how to correct them, any good photo editor has that tools.The best feature of this application is the recovery of text from blurred images. “33,000 people living in over 300 interconnected high-rise buildings, built without the contributions of a single architect, ungoverned by Hong Kong’s safety and health regulations, covering one square city block in a densely populated neighborhood near the end of the runway at Kai Tak airport. In collaboration with Ian Lambot, I spent five years photographing and becoming familiar with the Walled City, its residents, and how it was organized. So seemingly compromised and anarchic on its surface, it actually worked -and to a large extent, worked well. The Good Old Naughty Days (French title: Polissons et galipettes – “Rascals and somersaults”), released in 2002, is a compilation from over 300 recently discovered film clips from silent hardcore pornographic films made between 1905 and 1930, re-edited by director Michel Reilhac, with a new soundtrack by Eric Le Guen. Most of the films were made in France and were intended to be shown in brothels. Graphene explained
The video explains how graphene's incredible properties come from the unique arrangement of its atoms. Graphene, like diamonds and coal, is made up entirely of carbon. But unlike those materials, graphene's carbon atoms are arranged in two-dimensional sheets, making it incredibly strong and flexible. Since graphene also conducts electricity as well as copper, it could lead to flexible cell phone touchscreens and transparent, inexpensive solar cells. What's amazing about this film is that most of the scenes are simply shot on the street in present day Bangkok. They just added a bit of CGI cybernetics and robots to them.

The cave drawings were found by archaeologist Marc Azema and French artist Florent Rivere, who suggest that Paleolithic artists who lived as long as 30,000 years ago used animation effects on cave walls, which explains the multiple heads and limbs on animals in the drawings. The virtual universe
The map of the Internet is a photo shot of the global network as of end of 2011. It encompasses over 350 thousand websites from 196 countries and all domain zones. Information about more than 2 million links between the websites has joined some of them together into topical clusters. As one might have expected, the largest clusters are formed by national websites, i.e. sites belonging to one country. For the sake of convenience, all websites relative to a certain country carry the same color. For instance, the red zone at the top corresponds to Russian segment of the net, the yellow one on the left stands for the Chinese segment, the purple one on the right is Japanese, the large light-blue central one is the American segment, etc.Interesant cum Softpedia e site romanesc si e in romania ca locatie dar nu ca si culoare. Google maps - traficul in Bucuresti live
Daca tot am postat ieri un site pentru transportul public astazi e randul soferilor sa primeasca un cadou. Dupa trafficguide.ro apar si pe Google Maps informatiile despre traficul bucurestean.
Acoperirea este mult mai mare ca la trafficguide dar accuratetea datelor e mult mai mica (din cat am observat eu azi). Totusi astazi este deabia prima zi. Sa le dam o sansa si celor de la Google.
Oricum asta inseamna ca orice ruta calculata de gmaps in bucuresti va include acum si estimarea traficului, timpul pierdut, si alternative. Not bad.

Harta interactiva transport public Bucuresti
In sfarsit a facut cineva un site de cautare a rutelor RATB si pentru Bucuresti. Transporturban.ro iti permite sa gasesti imediat ce autobuz/troleibuz/tramvai sau metrou trebuie sa iei fara sa te bazezi pe sfaturile neconvingatoare ale altora.
Pe siteul lor o sa gasiti si aplicatia pentru smartphones (Android, WinMo, iOS)
Interfata este un pic cam enervanta dar rutele calculate sunt bune si permite si cumpararea de bilete electronice. Eu o testez de cateva saptamani deja si a fost de mare ajutor.

Fallen starhouse
do-ho suh's work 'fallen star' has opened to the public. he has created a small home which seems to have been suddenly moved 100 feet from a stable resting place on the ground to the ledge of a towering seven story school building situated in the center of the southern california campus. Copiuta pentru conversia rapida a monedelor straine
Am facut un spreadsheet dinamic de conversie valutara care include majoritatea monedelor europene plus dolarul american si renmnibi yuanul chinezesc.
Cum functioneaza? E simplu. Cand vreti sa plecati in alta tara deschideti acest spreadsheet si selectati pagina corespunzatoare monedei locale. Paginile sunt in partea de jos a ecranului.
La accesare tabelul va fi calculat la cursul zilei. Puteti de acolo sa o tipariti sau sa o copiati pe mobil si cand vreti sa faceti un schimb valutar foaia poate fi folosita ca si copiuta. Este mult mai usor sa va uitati pe copiuta cat inseamna 81 de leva bulgaresti decat sa faceti calculul in magazin.
Include si o pagina pentru cei care vin in Romania si vor sa transforme RON in EUR si USD (pagina 4 RON-USD-EUR).

Life Edited - small apartment challenge
An impressive collaboration between living-with-less blog, LifeEdited, and space-saving furnishing dealer, Resource Furniture, the LifeEdited Apartment is nearing completion. The goal: to fit 650 square feet of utility in just 420 square feet, including a living room drop-down home theater with hidden projector, and a standing/sitting work station. Preview video below...
The original challenge was a crowd sourced competition with the following parameters:
A design based on Graham Hill's 420 sf (~39 m2) apartment. The design should support the life of a real person in the apartment - someone who would work, eat, live, and entertain. We were looking for apartment designs that allowed for:
a sit-down dinner for 12 people
a comfortable lounging option for 8 people
space for 2 guests with some visual and ideally auditory privacy
a home office
a work area with space for a rolling tool chest
a hideable kitchen

Mutation furniture: maarten de ceulaer
belgium-based designer maarten de ceulaer presents his 'mutation series' at this year's milan design week 2012.
the pieces resemble the organic transformation of cells that have grown out of scale due to a virus or nuclear reaction.
de ceulaer is taking an experimental review of classical furniture upholstery, as each item is created by carefully composing patterns with cut-offs of
foam spheres of various sizes, which are then applied to the structure. the entire object is then coated with durable rubber mirroring a tactile velvet-like finish,
making each design completely different and unique. the prototypes range in size from small ottomans and stools to large sofas and over-sized chairs.

Nanoscale 3d printing
Printing three dimensional objects with very fine details using two-photon lithography can now be achieved orders of magnitude faster than similar devices in a breakthrough by Vienna University of Technology (TU Vienna) researchers.
The 3D printing process uses a liquid resin, which is hardened at precisely the correct spots by a focused laser beam. The focal point of the laser beam is guided through the resin by movable mirrors and leaves behind a hardened line of solid polymer a few hundred nanometers wide.
This fine resolution enables the creation of intricately structured sculptures as tiny as a grain of sand.

The IBM Smart City - Rio de Janiero
giant wall of screens — a sort of virtual Rio, rendered in real time. Video streams in from subway stations and major intersections. A sophisticated weather program predicts rainfall across the city. A map glows with the locations of car accidents, power failures and other problems.
This building is the Operations Center of the City of Rio, and its system was designed by I.B.M. at the request of Rio’s mayor, Eduardo Paes. There is nothing quite like it in the world’s other major cities. I.B.M. has created similar data centers elsewhere for single agencies like police departments. But never before has it built a citywide system integrating data from some 30 agencies, all under a single roof. It is the handiwork of an I.B.M. unit called Smarter Cities and, if all goes according to plan, it could lay the groundwork for a multibillion-dollar business.
The project cost Rio about $14 million, Mayor Paes said. If it all works according to plan, it could make Rio a model of data-driven city management.

Lumus HUD
Lumus is back with a second optical engine -- one that could be used in any style of frames, from prescription glasses to ski goggles. Available in binocular and monocular configurations, the tiny OE-31 sensor weighs just 10 grams (.35 ounces), allowing it to accommodate a variety of form factors besides your run-of-the mill (and quite dorky-looking) 3D glasses. As always, Lumus' hook is its ability to combine head up displays, augmented reality and see-through displays, though this time around the sensor allows for a 19-degree field of view and a full-color, 640 x 360 picture. Though that's not as impressive as the 720p, 3D-capable frames on offer at CES, the company argues it should be adequate for reading text

30000 year old plant regenerated
It was an Ice Age squirrel’s treasure chamber, a burrow containing fruit and seeds that had been stuck in the Siberian permafrost for over 30,000 years. From the fruit tissues, a team of Russian scientists managed to resurrect an entire plant in a pioneering experiment that paves the way for the revival of other species.
The Russian research team recovered the fruit after investigating dozens of fossil burrows hidden in ice deposits on the right bank of the lower Kolyma River in northeastern Siberia, the sediments dating back 30,000-32,000 years.

PROBLEMELE DIN BIBLIOTECILE MICI - povestea din Daraban
în ciuda vârstei reale (38), cred că mă puteți considera un ”tânăr bibliotecar”. De fapt, cred că ”tânăr bibliotecar” o să fiu și atunci când va trebui să ies la pensie, căci vreau să lucrez în bibliotecă atât timp cât voi fi capabil să fac ceva pentru ea. Biblioteca mea este una destul de mică din punct de vedere al fondului de carte (30.000 de unități), mare din punct de vedere al spațiului. Dacă mă raportez la asta, cred că mă număr printre norocoși. Clădirea este una foarte veche, construită în anul 1834, și a fost reședința unui moșier, care a întemeiat și târgul Darabani.
Dar printre cursuri, am reușit să fac și la bibliotecă ceea ce mi-am propus: am terminat amenajarea sălii de lectură, într-un spațiu cu o arhitectură frumoasă, care nu avea nici geamuri atunci când am intrat eu în bibliotecă, iar în mijlocul ei trona o grămadă de lemne;

am pregătit sala pentru calculatoarele pe care le voi primi prin programul Biblionet, tot din ”recondiționarea” unei săli nefolosite; am igienizat sălile care nu erau văruite de cel puțin 30 de ani (cum să atragi utilizatori în asemenea condiții?).

Iar în noiembrie, am participat cu un proiect la Concursul de Participare Comunitară, organizat de IREX, și am fost declarat câștigător. A fost prima încercare de acest gen din viața mea, iar faptul că am început cu dreptul, mi-a dat încredere că se poate și mai mult. În cadrul proiectului ”Ideile noastre contează!” mi-am propus să editez o publicație școlară cu elevii de la liceul din oraș, și să înființez un club de fotografie și de creație artistică. Deja am achiziționat echipamentele necesare, pentru care am primit finanțare, am creat colectivul redacțional al revistei, acum urmează să lansăm un concurs de eseuri și creație literară, câștigătorii urmând să fie promovați în paginile revistei START.
Dar orice problemă, oricât ar fi de grea, cu perseverență, se rezolvă. Noi nu trebuie decât să găsim soluțiile optime, și să le aplicăm, pentru binele nostru personal, al celor cărora le oferim serviciile noastre și nu în ultimul rând pentru prestigiul acestei instituții, importantă într-o comunitate care se respectă.

Big Big-Dog - DARPA Legged Squad Support System (LS3)
To help alleviate the impact of excess weight on troops, DARPA is developing a highly mobile, semi-autonomous four-legged robot, the Legged Squad Support System (LS3). LS3 includes onboard sensors to perceive obstacles in its environment and path-planning capabilities to avoid them.

OK Go - Needing/Getting - Official Video
The new music video from OK Go, made in partnership with Chevrolet. OK Go set up over 1000 instruments over two miles of desert outside Los Angeles. A Chevy Sonic was outfitted with retractable pneumatic arms designed to play the instruments, and the band recorded this version of Needing/Getting, singing as they played the instrument array with the car. The video took 4 months of preparation and 4 days of shooting and recording. There are no ringers or stand-ins; Damian took stunt driving lessons. Each piano had the lowest octaves tuned to the same note so that they'd play the right note no matter where they were struck. 'drew house' by australian firm simon laws anthill construction is a single family dwelling within a town just south of gladstone,
along the eastern queensland coast near the great barrier reef. two pavilions containing the living, bathing and sleeping areas
create a luxury camping atmosphere. the separate entities allow privacy during family group activities. positioned amidst a landscape
of bloodwoods and palms at a ridgetop, the residence responds to the family's connection with sugar mill iconography. window frames
and facade louvers are made from australian hardwood timber which has been naturally oiled for a minimal finish.

Burn treatment with robotic biomask
The mask will be comprised of two major layers. The top, a hard shell, will protect a patient’s face and also store electrical components. Underneath, a flexible polymer mask will fit around the contours of a patient’s face. It’ll be embedded with three more layers: An array of sensors to track the rate of healing, actuators to push up against the wound and hold the mask in place, and a network of micro-tubing and valves to pump therapeutics — whether antibiotics and pain killers or stem cells and growth factor — onto specific regions of the wound.
“Sensors would monitor the wound, and treatment inside the mask would be based on that data,” Moss says. “If healing is accelerated in one area of the burn, then the mask would know to supply different therapeutics to that region.”

Driverless cars
The use of technology in cars has been increasing in the direction of easing the driver's job. From video parking sensors to GPS navigation, the idea has been to automate, as much as possible, the job of driving. Another area where technology has been directed is in the area of safety. So to eliminate human errors let's eliminate human driving by heading technology straight into driverless supercars.

Spray antifurt SDNA
POLICE evaluation of a crime reduction campaign using SelectaDNA in Rotterdam has recently been announced and robbery figures have been reduced by a massive 65%.
The Amsterdam scheme uses SelectaDNA’s intruder spray which has been installed in luxury boutiques and jewellers. Altogether, 20 streets in the centre of the city have been declared a ‘SelectaDNA-protected’ zone by Police.
Once activated, the DNA spray emits a burst of hi-tech forensic solution onto the offenders. The solution contains a UV tracer and a unique DNA code, linking them irrefutably to the scene of the crime.
Traces of the DNA solution can be taken from the skin, hair and clothing of offenders, and sent away for forensic analysis to prove that they have broken into a particular premises. Although invisible and harmless, the UV and DNA will remain on an offender for weeks - clinging to fibres and sitting in creases of the skin.
Police routinely scan for traces of SelectaDNA in custody suites, and if they find it, it will help Police to obtain a conviction.

Cum au pus românii opinca pe Parlamentul de la Budapesta
Şi-au intrat trupele noastre în Budapesta la începutul lunii august 1919. Palatul Parlamentului maghiar a fost pus sub paza unui pluton de vânători.
Chemând pe căprarul Bivolaru, s-au suit în norii Budapestei şi au coborât steagul în lungul sforii, drept la jumătatea steajerului şi, luând apoi opinca răsuflată a căprarului, s-a urcat ca un pui de urs şi a pus-o drept căciulă în capul steajerului, lăsându-i nojiţele s-atîrne-n vânt. Şi aşa a fâlfâit multă vreme în cerul Budapestei steagul maghiar cu opinca românească deasupra lui
