“33,000 people living in over 300 interconnected high-rise buildings, built without the contributions of a single architect, ungoverned by Hong Kong’s safety and health regulations, covering one square city block in a densely populated neighborhood near the end of the runway at Kai Tak airport. In collaboration with Ian Lambot, I spent five years photographing and becoming familiar with the Walled City, its residents, and how it was organized. So seemingly compromised and anarchic on its surface, it actually worked -and to a large extent, worked well. The Walled City was torn down in 1992 but the photographs, oral histories, maps and essays in our book provide the most thorough record of daily life in a place that was a true Hong Kong original.”

Look closely: the bonds at centre are shorter than those at the edges, as they involve more electrons A pioneering team from IBM in Zurich has published single-molecule images so detailed that the type of atomic bonds between their atoms can be discerned. It is difficult to overstate what precision measurements these are. The experiments must be isolated from any kind of vibration coming from within the laboratory or even its surroundings. They are carried out at a scale so small that room temperature induces wigglings of the AFM's constituent molecules that would blur the images, so the apparatus is kept at a cool -268C.

Fallen starhouse

do-ho suh's work 'fallen star' has opened to the public. he has created a small home which seems to have been suddenly moved 100 feet from a stable resting place on the ground to the ledge of a towering seven story school building situated in the center of the southern california campus. 'fallen star' teeters on the corner and edge of UCSD's jacobs hall, also known as 'engineering building 1'. the sculpture, cantilevered at an angle of approximately ten degrees with its wood floor interior tilted by four degrees, measures 15 x 18 feet, weighing 70,000 pounds. it is permanently affixed to the roof of the university structure.

Mutation furniture: maarten de ceulaer

belgium-based designer maarten de ceulaer presents his 'mutation series' at this year's milan design week 2012.
the pieces resemble the organic transformation of cells that have grown out of scale due to a virus or nuclear reaction.
de ceulaer is taking an experimental review of classical furniture upholstery, as each item is created by carefully composing patterns with cut-offs of
foam spheres of various sizes, which are then applied to the structure. the entire object is then coated with durable rubber mirroring a tactile velvet-like finish,
making each design completely different and unique. the prototypes range in size from small ottomans and stools to large sofas and over-sized chairs.

curiosity dome lights

gabrielle ammann // gallery presents new 'curiosity dome lights' by swiss-born london-based artist / designer rolf sachs
at design miami / basel 2011. each of the lights features a mirrored dome and contains an integrated light source
which allows the illuminated reflective coating to become virtually transparent, in which a surprise is revealed from within.
these reflections are created on the inside of the mirror. the first of the 'curiosity' series were presented at design miami / basel 2010
and the new 2011 additions include: 'en-light-ened', 'look into my heart' and 'sleeping ericius'.

Paris - Huangzhou

You know, if I were to casually glance at this photo, I'd believe it were actually taken in Paris: The Eiffel Tower....those other buildings. Very Parisian. But look a little closer and you'll realize that it's not actually Paris at all. It's not even Disneyworld. It's China.

Located in the residential area of Tianducheng just outside of Hangzhou in East China's Zhejiang Province lies this modest recreation of the Champ de Mars and Gustave's greatest creation. Just over 2,000 people live here. What's especially weird is that I can't find any more information on this save for the photos. You'd think that a fake Paris sprouting up in China would have received some press somewhere. More pics (from Reuters) after the jump.

Planurile autostrazii suspendate

Autostrada urbană, după cum a fost numită oficial, va avea trei tronsoane și 50 de kilometri. Primul, cel de Nord, este cuprins între Lacul Morii și Șoseaua Colentina și va avea o lungime de 16,8 kilometri. Al doilea, de Sud-Vest, este proiectat pe o lungime de 17,4 km și va fi cuprins între Lacul Morii și Șoseaua Giurgiului. Ultimul, de Sud-Est, va avea 16,3 km și va închide inelul, fiind cuprins între Șoseaua Colentina și Șoseaua Giurgiului. Autostrada va fi construită pe trei niveluri: suprateran, subteran și la nivelul solului. Potrivit studiului de prefezabilitate, costul primului tronson al autostrăzii a fost estimat la 826 milioane de euro.

Deocamdată, Primăria a atribuit contractul pentru realizarea PUZ și studiu de fezabilitate pentru primul tronson.Cele cinci firme câștigătoare vor primi aproximativ 8 milioane de euro.

Ce este foarte interesant e faptul ca se vede si pe unde intra autostrada A3 in Bucuresti. (pe la Dragos prin curte se pare)
