Gestural interfaces - What Sci-Fi Tells Interaction Designers About Gestural Interfaces
It’s fair to say that, to the layperson, the Minority Report interface is synonymous with “gestural interface.” This interface is one of the most memorable things in a movie that is crowded with future technologies, and it is one of the most referenced interfaces in cinematic history. (In a quick and highly unscientific test, at the time of writing, we typed [sci-fi movie title] + “interface” into Google for each of the movies in the survey and compared the number of results. “Minority Report interface” returned 459,000 hits on Google, more than six times as many as the runner-up, which was “Star Trek interface” at 68,800.)
So what can movies teach us about gestural interface design?

Desk with Meters
I designed this desk to get all my computer equipment and cables up off the floor, behind cabinet doors, and leave my work surface completely clear. A major part of this project was also incorporating the analog meters which show my computer’s status.Tot articolul: http://www.matthewfickett.com/2012/01/desk-with-meters/

Mutation furniture: maarten de ceulaer
belgium-based designer maarten de ceulaer presents his 'mutation series' at this year's milan design week 2012.
the pieces resemble the organic transformation of cells that have grown out of scale due to a virus or nuclear reaction.
de ceulaer is taking an experimental review of classical furniture upholstery, as each item is created by carefully composing patterns with cut-offs of
foam spheres of various sizes, which are then applied to the structure. the entire object is then coated with durable rubber mirroring a tactile velvet-like finish,
making each design completely different and unique. the prototypes range in size from small ottomans and stools to large sofas and over-sized chairs.

Nostalgic LED lightbulb
the panasonic LDAHV4L27CG LED bulb is the first in the world to use clear glass to show the light source.
with its single filament it uses just 4.4 watts. the ultra long life LED bulbs can achieve a lifetime of 40,000 hours
which is approximately 40 years (at usage of 2.7 hours per day).
lighting designers will appreciate them probably also because most of us still love the sharp shadows created
by clear tungsten bulbs. LED delivers 100% of the light instantly. so no need anymore to wait a warm up of the lamp.
you can finally truly use it in a staircase or bathroom or wherever the light needs to be switched on 100% instantly.
with same dimensions as the traditional light source, it can be used as a perfect replacement for incandescent light bulbs.
feel free now to switch on or switch off the bulb anytime as you want. the panasonic LED circuit enables almost
infinite switch on & off cycles (100,000 times) without damaging the lifetime.
Eu sunt un mare fan al formei traditionale de bec.

which allows the illuminated reflective coating to become virtually transparent, in which a surprise is revealed from within.
these reflections are created on the inside of the mirror. the first of the 'curiosity' series were presented at design miami / basel 2010
and the new 2011 additions include: 'en-light-ened', 'look into my heart' and 'sleeping ericius'.

Lumen Lamp
This friendly looking lamp by Enrico Salis supports a single shelf for books and other objects while it’s adjustable upper arm holds a paper chandelier- almost as if it’s presenting an offering of light to the user. The adjustable upper arm can be set in two positions while the electrical wire remains hidden within the simple but rigid supporting structure. This straightforward design makes a great lighting solution bedside or near a comfy chair; perfect for late night reading.

Subdivided Column A Procedural Approach to Ornament
In this project, an abstracted doric column is used as an input to a subdivision processes. This input form conveys basic topographical and topological information about the form to be generated. It contains data about the proportions of the the column's shaft, capital, base, as well information about its fluting and entasis.
The process functions by taking each face (or facet) of this doric column and dividing it into four faces. The new faces in turn are further divided again and again, until after many steps one arrives at the final form: an intricate column made of 16 million faces. Each subdivision step adds further levels of detail (or "information") to the form. The first steps of the process influence the overall shape and its curvature, the next steps determine the surface development, while the final steps generate a minuscule texture on top of the broader surfaces.
The resulting columns have a distinct language of form unlike anything created by traditional processes. They exhibit both highly specific local conditions as well as an overall coherency and continuity. Their ornament is in continuous flow, yet it consist of very distinct local formations. The complexity of the columns contrasts with the simplicity of the their generative process and the their initial input.
Vreau sa vad lucruri de acest fel si la noi. Va spun eu cum se fabrica :P

LED cu ratan
aura' by béatrice durandard + océane delain was born from the desire to freshen the
image of traditional basketry and integrate into the home using in a new way.
the craftsmanship, which has existed for thousands of years is used with LED sources
to create a collection of hanging and wall mounted lamps. strands of rattan are replaced
with flexible strips of LED lights during the weaving process, working them directly
into the structure of the object.
aura won first price in 'adream', a european architecture and design contest. a grant was
given to the two french designers to further develop and manufacture the product. the first
prototypes are on currently on exhibit at espace saint-valentin in lausanne, switzerland
until march 13, 2011.

Metrouri 98% reciclabile in Polonia
The interiors are spaciously appointed with extra-wide entrances, for accommodating better passenger flow, large electronic displays for system maps, and lighting that's placed at soothing intervals, rather than in blaring, monolithic banks. The electronics and mechanics cabinets have also been removed from the actual cabin walls -- so that the interior space is as spacious as possible. And finally, you'll also notice that the handholds are lit from above and shaped like tree branches -- a symbol, the designers say, of the subway cars green ambitions.
Those green bonafides primarily come in the form of the carriage's aluminum, "weight-optimized" chassis, which is significantly lighter than the average traincar, reducing its energy consumption. And... wait for it... the carriages are expected to be 97.5% recyclable as well.

Artist Guildwars - Daniel Dociu
(click pt mai mari)
Bio:
Daniel Dociu was raised in Cluj, the capital of Transylvania in Romania. After studying art and architecture, he got his Masters in Industrial Design from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cluj. He moved to the USA in 1990 after spending two years in Athens, Greece, and he has lived in the Seattle area since 1991.
After working as a toy designer for two years, Dociu wisely jumped ship to interactive entertainment. “I’ve been working as an Art Director in the games industry ever since,” says Dociu, “for companies like Squaresoft, Electronic Arts (twice!), and Zipper Interactive. I have done consulting for Microsoft and freelance work for Wizards of the Coast, Digital Anvil as well as a fair share of small developers who have come and gone.” For the past five years, Daniel Dociu has been with ArenaNet, a fully owned subsidiary of NCSoft, in an art director and lead concept artist role. More recently he's stepped into the Chief Art Director role for NCsoft, overseeing visual development for all of NCsoft's North American projects, with particular focus on ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2.

Fucking with the mail: Artist puts Royal Mail to the test
We may be living in the era of the email, but one young illustrator has proved that the art of correspondence is far from dead. While working for her degree at Glasgow School of Art Harriet Russell decided to find out exactly what lengths the men and women of the Royal Mail were willing to go to to ensure the safe delivery of her missives.

How to make your own Cut Out Paper Vertical Sundial
This page is about Sundials. Sundials are instruments that tell you the time with the shadow of the sun. To design a sundial you need to know exactly where you are going to put it, i.e. you need to know the longitude, the latitude and the orientation of the wall with respect to North.
I have designed this page and integrated Google Maps. It helps you to easily find all the parameters needed and finally produces a printable page with a cut-out paper sundial, that can be cut and folded to give you a vertical sundial.
This page allows you to make your own Cut Out Paper Vertical Sundial customized to your place on earth and the declination of the wall you are going to put it on.
