Titanoboa - Sarpele robot
Se pare ca a costat 10000 USD in materiale numai pana acum. Scopul final este sa recreeze un sarpe preistoric

Ultraviolet vision
Poate ati auzit ca renii arctici vad in spectrul UV. Interesant dar si multe insecte sunt capabile de asta. Si mai interesant este cum arata lumea in UV:

Cancer sniffing dog trained
Japanese researchers are reporting a 'lab' breakthrough: a retriever that can detect bowel cancer in breath and stool samples as accurately as hi-tech diagnostic tools.
The team, led by Hideto Sonoda at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, used a specially-trained female black labrador to carry out 74 "sniff tests" over a period of several months.
Each of the tests comprised five breath or stool samples, only one of which was cancerous.
The samples came from 48 people with confirmed bowel cancer at various stages of the disease and 258 volunteers with no bowel cancer or who had had cancer in the past.

Surprisingly Effective Treatments for Depression
- x-axis (popularity) = the fraction of respondents who tried a given treatmentSursa
- y-axis (effectiveness) = the average rated effectiveness of a given treatment, Bayes-adjusted for the number of respondents
- Vertical grey line = the average fraction of respondents who tried each treatment
- Horizontal grey line = the average rated effectivenss of all treatments
- Quadrants – Treatments in the upper-left quadrant have below-average usage, but above-average effectiveness, so presumably more people would benefit by trying these. Those in the lower-right quadrant have above-average usage but below-average effectiveness, so presumably more people would benefit by avoiding these.

Bedbugs return part 2
Se pare ca epidemia e destul de grava si a atras atentia CDCului
Tot articolul:http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/31/science/31bedbug.html
Eu zic sa pastram tot DDTul care ne-a ramas si sa il pastram cu sfintenie just in case.
De asemenea niste tips:

The classic bedbug strain that all newly caught bugs are compared against is a colony originally from Fort Dix, N.J., that a researcher kept alive for 30 years by letting it feed on him.
But Stephen A. Kells, a University of Minnesota entomologist, said he “prefers not to play with that risk.” He feeds his bugs expired blood-bank blood through parafilm.
Coby Schal of North Carolina State said he formerly used condoms filled with rabbit blood, but switched to parafilm because his condom budget raised eyebrows with university auditors.

De asemenea niste tips:
- Check the corners of your mattress (under) for little reddish brown spots. This is the first thing you should do at every hotel you stay at
- They leave black-grey poop stains on white surfaces
- They are visible with the naked eye

Bedbugs return!
Din cauza lipsei DDTului si din cauza noilor obiceiuri de a depozita sau aduce mobila de pe strada America sufera de o epidemie groaznica de purici de pat.

Scientists Map Entire Brain Network: “The most complex mass of protoplasm on earth—perhaps even in our galaxy."
“We have successfully uncovered and mapped the most comprehensive long-distance network of the Macaque monkey brain, which is essential for understanding the brain’s behavior, complexity, dynamics and computation,” announced Dharmendra S. Modha of IBM. “We can now gain unprecedented insight into how information travels and is processed across the brain. We have collated a comprehensive, consistent, concise, coherent, and colossal network spanning the entire brain and grounded in anatomical tracing studies that is a stepping stone to both fundamental and applied research in neuroscience and cognitive computing,” he added.

Brainless cat walking
Remarkably the cat was made decerebrate for the purpose of the experiment. This has lead researchers to the hypothesis that, when a quadruped walks/trots/gallops (or walks/runs in the case a biped), minimal control comes from the brain, and most of the control is computed morphologically through an implicit feedback structure in the bio-mechanical design.
